Eating Less but Not Losing Weight? Here’s Why…
Let Me Explain Why - Through the Deep Health Model.
When it comes to changing the way we eat, achieving a body we feel good in, and letting go of the idea of food as a reward or punishment, we need to look beyond just the physical aspect. We need to consider our overall well-being in a more holistic and multi-dimensional way.
That’s where the concept of Deep Health comes in.
But before diving into how we can truly achieve deep health, let’s take a step back and talk about how we perceive food and how we can shift our mindset around eating.
Eating is a biological need, just like sleeping or going to the toilet. It’s not something to label as “good” or “bad,” or use as a reward or punishment.
To illustrate this better, let me give you a relatable example:
Imagine you're on a road trip and you feel a slight urge to pee. If it’s manageable, you might wait until you reach your destination. But if it’s urgent, you'll pull over at the next petrol station, use the toilet, and continue your journey.
You don’t ignore it and pee your pants, right?
Eating works the same way. When you’re truly in tune with your body and feel hungry, you simply eat.
There’s no need to overdo it, nor to suppress it. It’s just a need - nothing more, nothing less.
Of course, in moments of emotional eating, we often lose this kind of logical thinking, I get that. But it’s still important to remember: food is a need, not a tool to manage every emotion or situation we face. In today’s world, eating has, unfortunately, shifted away from being just a biological necessity to becoming a coping mechanism. And in the process, we’ve lost touch with its true purpose.
So, What Is Deep Health?
Most of us ultimately want to be healthy, truly healthy.
Not just looking fit on the outside, but feeling good mentally, emotionally, socially, and in every aspect of our lives.
The goal is not to be skinny. The goal is to be healthy.
Because when our body is in balance, when our hormones, digestion, and elimination systems are working properly, we naturally feel more energetic. And as a result, we settle into our ideal weight and feel good in our skin - not too thin, not too heavy, just right.
We become the best version of ourselves; not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally.
Deep Health is about reaching that best version of ourselves. And it looks at six interconnected dimensions of well-being:
The 6 Pillars of Deep Health:
Physical Health: Nutrition, sleep, movement, energy levels, and how your body functions.
Mental Health: Your ability to focus, manage stress, and think clearly.
Emotional Health: Being aware of your feelings, naming and processing them without suppression, and developing emotional resilience.
Existential Health: Finding meaning, purpose, and inner fulfillment in your life.
Social Health: Having supportive relationships and a sense of belonging.
Environmental Health: The impact of your physical and social surroundings on your well-being.
Each of these areas is deeply interconnected. When something feels off in one, it often affects the others too. And food becomes the easiest, and most socially accepted, way to try to manage that imbalance.
But here’s the powerful part: Improving even just one area can create a ripple effect across the others.
That’s the real strength of embracing deep health; the awareness that your well-being is a system, not a silo.
